Additional 500 Cups: Ceramic Explorations of Utility & Grace (500 Series) Information

In the hands of an expert ceramist, the once-simple cup can become an extraordinary work of art--as these 500 magnificent examples so beautifully prove. The exciting pieces come from an international array of artists, each with a unique perspective. The stylishly varied collection has a little bit of everything: the cups range from handbuilt to wheel-thrown, practical to sculptural, round to square. Benjamin Schulman's "Stacked Teacup Set" takes a strictly functional approach, while Heather O'Brien's "Dessert Cups on Stand" focuses on aesthetic form rather than usefulness. Annette Gates' "Espresso Shot Cups with Rubies" has a surface design of simple abstract lines and dots of glaze and jewels. Some are whimsical, others starkly conceptual. Every one is a treat for the eye.

What Customers Say About 500 Cups: Ceramic Explorations of Utility & Grace (500 Series):

Apparently the artists wanted to keep their techniques private, but their work public. They give me lots of new ideas to use in my own pottery. This book is basically a picture book with many unique creations by other artists. I found that many of the pieces looked difficult to replicate, as they can become very abstract. I highly recommend this book for the person that just needs a new direction to go with their art. I am currently requesting the other books like 500 bowls, pitchers, plates, etc.One thing to know is that this book is not a How-To Manual. There are some descriptions of certain properties, such as the type of firing and clay. Other than that, the pieces served me as inspirations for experimentation.

The variety of effects possible with ceramics and glazes never fails to amaze. I collect ceramics but I could never afford or find so many lovely examples as are in this $16 book. One complaint: The text notes some of the technical features of each piece without defining them or explaining what they mean.

You'll find yourself referring to it over time for inspiration and enjoyment. I have 6 books in this series, and I enjoy them all. Of the 500. They are well-edited and the photos are fantastic. You really can't read this book in one sitting. series this is my least-favorite, but it is still very good. My favorites are "500 Figures in Clay" and "500 animals in Clay".

It has a great variety of different shapes and sizes. As a potter. I received this as a gift for Christmas and I love to look at all the ideas that people have created. Also, the most important part of a piece, the glaze work is awesome. It has really helped stimulate ideas for myself.

As one whose creativity needs a nudge, I love this book. They are many admirable and (important for me) inspiring pieces pictures. I tabbed many pages with "I want to try that" and rekindled a love of pottery, particulary of course of cups and mugs. The variety of cups shown is very wide: Simplic, lavishly decorated, purely artistic, functional, etc. The artist statement that accompanies many is also nice, as it explains many themed cup sets.
